Before catching up with this business owner I have always considered business owners in general to be very similar. Just want to grow their business, more focused on the future, very heavily focused on increasing their income. But after meeting this business owner changed my way of thinking.
He was the first person I had come across that just enjoys what he does and cares more about having reliable, trusting customers that he can build a long-term relationship with than building a business than can produce money for him well into the future. It made me question why he is even in business for that matter because the main reason why people start business's these days is to make more money than they would working for someone else.
Dave started his lawn care and gardening business back at the end of 2015 and has been running it successfully ever since. He got to a point in his life where he was sick of being on the doll and wanted a different way to live. He began to realise how much happier he was working for himself. Just being in control of his day and his life for that matter, disregarding how much money he had in his pocket at the end of the week.
From the day he started, he knew in himself that he was an honest hard-working individual, but he didn't know much about business. He told me the hardest part he found when he opened was how to price his work and finding customers that would hire him. He began to realise that the work he was doing was not just a flat hourly rate, but he had to quote working at people's houses because not every job was the same.
Dave found that even when he quoted someone for the job, they would come back at them saying they could get it $5 cheaper somewhere else and being the person, he was he didn't like working with people that just wanted to rip him off. He said to me " What people don't realise is that when they hire other people besides me, they work for the hour but when I work, I work to beat the hour".
He loves his job and everything he does is to help people out. It's why he doesn't want to expand his business in the near future because he said he just wants a few loyal customers that he can help maintain their home well into the future. After now 4 years in the business he told me that he is not just restricted to mowing people's lawns. He does everything that you could possible want done to your backyard and has the tools to do it. It's why when he works, he works fast because he knows what he is doing.
So if you are someone that wants to a hire a person that will maintain your garden and yard for years to come and will actually care more about giving and helping you out than just making a quick buck of you. Give Dave a call because from what I gathered from him, He is one of the few business owners out their today that truly care about the people they work with.
